Former Formula 3 driver Zdenek Hovanec has died.
Last Saturday, July 18, 21-year-old Portuguese driver Zdenek Hovanec passed away, known to the public for his performances in Formula 3 at various stages in 2021 and 2022. The tragic news was published in the O Noticias da Trofa, and the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Zdenek Hovanec was born in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela, had Czech roots, and moved to Portugal as a teenager. He spent most of his career racing under a Portuguese racing license.
In 2018, Zdenek began karting in Portugal, and two years later made his debut in Formula 4. In the UAE championship, he finished the season in seventh place, having reached the podium twice. Additionally, he competed in the Italian Formula 4.
In 2021, Hovanec moved to Euroformula Open, where he raced for Double R Racing, and then had the opportunity to participate in several Formula 3 stages with Charouz Racing System. In the same season, Zdenek also took part in the Asian Formula 3 and the Portuguese circuit racing championship driving a Ferrari 458 Challenge.
In 2022, he again participated in several Formula 3 stages with Charouz, as well as competing in the BOSS GP series. Driving a former Formula 2 car, Hovanec won five out of six races he participated in, secured five pole positions, and finished fifth in the season standings despite an incomplete schedule.
In 2023, he focused on endurance racing, competing in the Ultimate Cup series for the TS Corse team. Additionally, Hovanec participated in the official GT World Challenge Europe tests with the GetSpeed team, driving a Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo.
The funeral will take place on Thursday in the Portuguese city of Matosinhos.
