Fernando Alonso: The expectations were very high

      We have already provided fresh information from the Italian press, according to which Fernando Alonso will make a decision about his plans for the next season depending on how fast the updated Aston Martin car will be, which the team is preparing for the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, the Spanish driver himself assures that his decision does not depend on this.

      “The updated car will not affect anything, as my decision will not depend on what speed we are showing this year,” says Fernando Alonso. “The start of this season has been unsuccessful, and I cannot make a decision about next season based on results that do not reflect the real state of affairs. The true potential of the team is much higher than what we are seeing now.

      I think my decision regarding next year will largely depend on the regulations. Driving such cars on tracks like Spa or Silverstone in the last stage is not at all what I dream of when I think about my future, so we’ll see.

      We had high hopes for these regulations, for the arrival of Adrian Newey to the team, for Honda and everything else. Expectations were very high, but we did not meet them.

      I can’t say it was hard; we just experienced disappointment when we saw the new car during testing in Barcelona. But at the same time, the whole team took what happened as a challenge and wants to achieve more. I hope the stage in Budapest will be the first step towards returning to the level we want to reach, which will help the team move in the right direction again.”
