The challenge with new technology is how quickly it can become outdated. What happens next? We have all become accustomed to exchanging our old phones as if they were vintage cars from the 1950s with last year’s tail fins, but it doesn't have to be this way.

The swift evolution of digital technology is perfectly illustrated by standalone GPS devices. They have been rendered obsolete by smartphones and the widespread incorporation of built-in navigation systems in modern vehicles. However, if you own an older Garmin device, it likely still functions well. There are compelling reasons to continue using it.

A recent post on the r/BuyItForLife subreddit highlights Garmin's commitment to offering free lifetime map updates for its GPS devices. One user shared that they purchased a Garmin Nuvi 1390LMT around 15 years ago, and a screenshot revealed that it received a map update on July 22, 2026. The user noted that the device remains reliable and provides accurate directions.

In fact, Garmin’s website offers comprehensive instructions for updating maps on existing devices. This is partly because, as another commenter noted, the maps themselves are as much a product for Garmin as the devices. When car manufacturers select Garmin navigation systems, the choice is driven not only by the hardware but also by access to the company's extensive dataset.

This suggests that if you drive an older car, retrieving that GPS device from the junk drawer could be a practical alternative to attaching your phone to the dashboard with a suction cup. This could be increasingly relevant as concerns rise regarding the data smartphones gather and how that information can be utilized (and potentially misused) by law enforcement. Additionally, it would serve as an ideal period accessory for whatever the 2000s version of Radwood may eventually be named.

      They truly mean it—Garmin.

As noted by my colleague Andrew Collins, dedicated GPS devices are also excellent for off-roading. Signal reception is not an issue, allowing you to use your phone for other tasks or simply put it away to stay engaged. No matter where you drive, you won't have to fret about an automaker withdrawing data support for your vehicle, rendering its navigation system ineffective.
