Domenicali suggests that the return of the V8 engine might be postponed until 2030.

Stefano Domenicali has suggested that Max Verstappen’s new Red Bull contract, extending to 2030, may be connected to Formula 1’s serious discussions about advancing the next engine regulations. The F1 CEO expressed his pleasure at Verstappen's long-term commitment in an interview with De Telegraaf. "This is fantastic news for me personally; I’m very pleased about it," he stated.

"Max is a living legend. I believe this is the right decision. Max is the best driver in the world, and this is the premier platform in motorsport."

Domenicali shared that he received a call from Laurent Mekies and Verstappen on Tuesday from England, which he viewed as a commendable gesture of respect. He mentioned that he has also been having private conversations with Verstappen regarding the future direction of the sport. "I consider the opinions of someone like Max very seriously," the Italian emphasized. "It would be foolish not to."

"I always pay attention to the drivers; they are our most valuable asset. I've consistently said this, and I will continue to do so."

A noteworthy aspect concerns the upcoming engine regulations. While the current plans indicate a new cycle starting in 2031, Domenicali now acknowledges that discussions are seriously considering 2030 instead. "I think quite ambitiously," he remarked when asked about the possibility of V8 engines returning sooner.

"The FIA president is very keen on that, and we are in support of him. Naturally, there are still details to be finalized, but I believe we are all moving in the right direction."

When it was proposed that Verstappen’s new contract expiring in 2030 might hold significance, Domenicali did not dismiss the idea. "Stay tuned! Watch the news," he advised Viaplay. "Everything looks promising."

Verstappen himself has mentioned that the new engine cycle influenced the duration of his contract. When questioned if this could be his final deal in Formula 1, he replied, "That chance is quite high. But I’m uncertain."

"That will depend somewhat on how things unfold in the coming years. A lot can still happen during that time."
