Sainz states that 'quality' is the main weakness of Williams.
Carlos Sainz states that Williams’ primary issue is no longer just the car's design or weight, but rather the consistency and quality of the components produced by the factory. The recently re-signed Spanish driver is facing another challenging weekend at Zandvoort and notes that seemingly identical parts do not always perform the same.
"What we need to understand as a team is why there is so much variability among the car's parts, and we are unsure of the cause," he conveyed to the Spanish media. "Quality and production control of components is one of our major weaknesses as a team and overall, and that’s where we need the most improvement for next year, I would say."
"More than the weight issue, it's about the quality control of the parts. There are remnants of past issues within the team that we need to address, as it's evident we struggle significantly during race weekends."
For example, Sainz mentions that different iterations of the same floor specification can behave inconsistently. "Yes, we do have more floors like that one; we have many versions, but each floor tends to perform differently," he remarked. He notes that this inconsistency complicates understanding the car under the new regulations.
"We have a lot to learn as a team because adjusting one element can result in an opposite effect. We need to identify several issues that are hindering our progress if we want to be competitive next year."
"It’s very challenging to make any advancements next year without a proper understanding of the car."
Team principal James Vowles acknowledges that Williams was legitimately concerned about Sainz possibly leaving. "We were apprehensive about losing him because he’s a driver with championship-caliber talent," noted the Brit. "He deserves the chance to compete for podiums and beyond."
"We didn’t provide him the opportunity to compete for everything, despite having a clear vision. Taking a step back risks losing drivers, but I value their continued support."
For Sainz, the current sporting situation is grim. "Honestly, we’re battling for 17th, 16th, 15th."
"So, as a team, we’re focusing on learning, investing, and testing things that will enhance our performance next year. After having fought for victories in F1, it feels so trivial that you prefer to invest in the future."
