Lewis Hamilton has fueled speculation about potentially staying with Ferrari until 2028, expressing his desire to continue racing for "a long time." The 41-year-old is contracted for the upcoming season, but rumors surrounding Monza have hinted at an extension.
When La Repubblica inquired about his future following the long-term contracts secured by Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, Hamilton commented: "I still have a year ahead of me, so now isn’t the moment to focus on that." He added, "But I have a strong affinity for Ferrari; it feels like home, and I plan to race for an extended period."
"I think I’ll be here even with the new regulations," he stated.
Hamilton also shared how his relationship with Ferrari has matured since a challenging debut season. "I had requested changes last season, but the team hesitated to implement too many," explained the seven-time world champion. "The thought made them anxious. They weren’t prepared for the new elements as they had never introduced them previously."
He noted that the changes ultimately became quite significant. "Gradually, I modified everything—brakes, chassis components, suspension, seat position, steering setup."
When asked if Charles Leclerc followed a similar path, Hamilton confirmed: "Yes, it originated from my side, which allows us to steer in the same direction."
This improved alignment has coincided with a notably stronger 2026 season, highlighted by Hamilton’s victory in Barcelona and a return to contention for the championship. "Absolutely. I’m 59 points behind, but I’m making progress, and there's still a lot of racing left," said the Briton. "It won’t be easy, but I still have faith."
Hamilton also dismissed worries about his age, stating, "Recently, I was in a meeting discussing reaction times. Mine remains good; in fact, my engineers have told me it’s quicker than many younger drivers." He added, "They say you start to slow down at 40—I'm 41. Of course, recovery takes longer, but I now have many more tools to assist me."
