The 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport has arrived, accompanied by its electrified all-wheel-drive counterpart, the 2027 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport X (farewell E-Ray). Under the hood of these performance-oriented trims lies the manufacturer's next-gen high-performance V8: the LS6. This new 409-cubic-inch V8 will also be available in the base-model Stingray for the 2027 lineup, giving buyers an abundance of options when selecting the mid-engine ‘Vette tailored to their performance and budget preferences.

The Stingray delivers 535 horsepower and 520 lb-ft of torque, which carries over to the rear-wheel-drive Grand Sport (the GS receives a range of handling and styling enhancements; more on that later), while the top-tier Grand Sport X incorporates a permanent magnetic drive motor on the front axle, elevating its performance to an impressive 721 hp.

I recently tested the Grand Sport and Grand Sport X on both the track and the street, while I only had the chance to experience the base Stingray on the street. You might assume that there wouldn’t be much distinction among the three variants sharing the same engine, but you would be surprised at how distinctly unique each car's character truly is. This is also true for the GS and GS X, where, in theory, the primary difference lies in the active front axle and additional power.

Without further delay, here's your LS6 overview and 2027 Chevy Corvette purchasing guide:

GM was clear in the opening of its press release: “This next-generation V8 produces more torque than any naturally aspirated V8 before it.” This is accurate; its 520 lb-ft of torque surpasses its predecessor, the LT2, which provided 470 lb-ft. Furthermore, there has been a significant displacement increase from 6.2 liters in the prior model to 6.7 liters in the new engine. Additionally, horsepower has risen by a healthy 45, from 490 hp to 535.

Under the guidance of assistant chief engineer Mike Kociba, who proudly states, “there’s no replacement for displacement,” the new 6.7-liter engine features a 13.0:1 compression ratio—the highest ever for a Corvette—for enhanced responsiveness, and a 95-mm throttle body with a tunnel ram intake that includes high-velocity ports to allow for greater air movement. A new lubrication system, forged pistons and rods, and updated exhaust manifolds contribute to durability under prolonged high-load and high-temperature conditions.

In terms of delivering power to the wheels, buyers can opt for an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or… well, that’s the only choice.

Although it’s the most affordable option, during my time in and out of the three Corvettes, I never felt I was in a base model. Naturally, there might be variations in materials, color selections, and performance depending on options and packages, but the Stingray effectively provides the authentic Corvette experience.

The Stingray’s V8 engine generates 535 hp and 520 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle I drove on public roads near Atlanta Motorsports Park was a 3LT equipped with the Z51 performance package, which included revised suspension tuning through its optional magnetic ride control. The final drive ratio has been shortened for 2027 to enhance throttle response, and Chevy claims improved aerodynamic performance, while the new Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 is now the stock tire.

The LS6 performs exceptionally well in the base model, offering solid acceleration and, most importantly, a delightful sound for your daily commutes or weekend adventures. The engine is naturally loud, but Chevy’s programming of the driving modes allows it to resonate vibrantly or, if preferred, quietly for starts or in “Tour” mode. Switch to Sport or Track mode, and ear protection might be advisable, especially on long drives. The standard side exhaust remains a popular option, but buyers can now choose a center exhaust, which indeed makes a noticeable difference. The latter delivers a deeper bass tone, making it sound fuller, as demonstrated in this video.

On the road, the Stingray is everything you’d anticipate and desire. It's nimble and responds with speed when needed. You’ll notice the increase in power, but the real highlight is the added torque, which harmonizes well with the car's performance, giving it a sports car essence with a hint of muscle car appeal. Moreover, it remains relatively user-friendly at high speeds, unless pushed to the extreme. The ride quality from my tester was quite satisfying, a necessary attribute given Atlanta's notorious traffic.

Atlanta Motorsports Park serves as a challenging track. It’s a genuine driver’s circuit that puts skills to the test, but more importantly, it evaluates many of
