FIA is set to officially approve Cadillac's entry into Formula 1.
Cadillac, the potential new eleventh Formula 1 team, is nearly ready to overcome the final obstacle before being officially authorized to launch in 2026. After a prolonged situation that even led to investigations by the US government, F1 owner Liberty Media has finally opted to allow the project, which was initially initiated by Andretti, to move forward.
According to Auto Motor und Sport, the last step is the official entry approval from the FIA. The Paris-based federation had initially given its approval to the Andretti-Cadillac application two years ago, meaning a new application process has begun. Correspondent Michael Schmidt indicated, however, that the approval should be "a formality" and should only take a few weeks.
"The FIA is currently examining Cadillac’s entry," a representative for the FIA stated. "We are in the final stages of our operational review and anticipate completing the process soon. We are adhering to the designated timeline."
"If Cadillac’s entry receives approval, it will fulfill the entry requirements for the 2026 season." The FIA official further explained that Cadillac will immediately be subject to budget cap limitations and wind tunnel regulations once the approval is granted.
"The budget cap will apply to Cadillac in 2025 as soon as its registration for the 2026 season is finalized," the spokesperson noted. It was also disclosed that if Cadillac, owned by General Motors, aims to utilize a works power unit by 2028, it must start adhering to the relevant regulations immediately.
"According to current regulations," the FIA official added, "power unit manufacturers are required to follow the necessary restrictions, including bench testing, at least three years before their intended entry. This would be the latest date to inform the FIA."
