In 2025, there will be an increased number of race directors and stewards, according to the FIA.
This year, Formula 1 will have multiple race directors and a larger pool of potential stewards. This announcement comes from the contentious FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who, while speaking at an event in Madrid, described the recent upheaval within the sport's governing body as a necessary effort to "clean house."
In the specialized Spanish media, he addressed the recent uproar regarding new strict penalties for driver misconduct, such as using foul language, stating, "If they can control a F1 car, they can control their words."
Another significant controversy arose at the conclusion of the 2024 world championship when race director Niels Wittich was abruptly dismissed. This placed enormous pressure on his interim successor, Rui Marques, who also had to fulfill his original race director responsibilities for Formula 3 and Formula 2.
FIA president Ben Sulayem emphasized the need for fresh talent among the officials to support the motorsport industry. He disclosed that there will be more than one race director in 2025. "We will know in the next few days who that will be and how many will be involved," said the 63-year-old. "But there will definitely be new faces, and there will be more than one, that’s certain."
He noted that there have been individuals preparing behind the scenes. "You cannot simply throw someone into this great challenge," Ben Sulayem remarked. He expressed indifference to the opinions of teams and drivers regarding these changes. "The FIA is still the owner of the championship," he asserted. "Teams can complain, drivers can complain, but they don’t want to bear the costs."
"It has taken us over two and a half years to reach this point. Will we see the results? We'll know when the season begins. There are mistakes, and then the FIA gets blamed. But why can't the criticism be constructive instead, asking together 'how can we find a solution?' I tell you, the solution lies in training and bringing in new people."
Lastly, addressing the issue of swearing in Formula 1, Ben Sulayem acknowledged that one proposal is to "simply switch off the radios" for broadcasters. "Or do we delay the transmissions?" he inquired. "Perhaps. There are many aspects we are currently working on with our promoter."
