Sainz says Williams isn't 'flat' despite having 'low' expectations.

Carlos Sainz acknowledges that his hopes for favorable results in 2025 are quite low. For the last four years, the Spanish driver was part of a highly successful duo at Ferrari, racing alongside Charles Leclerc. He has now been replaced by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton for 2025 and beyond. When asked about Hamilton's potential performance, the 30-year-old Sainz responded diplomatically, saying, "I was never his teammate, so I don’t know what he is capable of. I have never seen his data. I know how good Charles is, but I can’t say the same about Lewis. Based on his background and results, there’s a strong possibility that he will be competitive in the Ferrari. However, that largely depends on how well he can adapt to the car and the team. Numerous factors come into play, making it impossible for me to predict."

It is evident that Sainz would have preferred to remain with Ferrari. "I recall telling everyone at Ferrari before I left that they are ready to compete for championships and even win a title this year. When I departed, the team was in high spirits, fully prepared for that challenge. And I know that Charles is eager to contend for a championship," he remarked.

Sainz's options for 2025 were quite limited, as both Red Bull and Mercedes declined him. Ultimately, he was persuaded by James Vowles’ vision for revitalizing Williams to its former stature. However, after finishing second-to-last in 2024, Vowles has been candid about the team's focus this year being on development and gearing up for the entirely new regulations set for 2026.

"I think the team is keeping expectations low at this point," Sainz told Spanish reporters when discussing his outlook for 2025. "This doesn’t imply we’re stagnant. It suggests the team recognizes this year as a transitional period ahead of 2026, which is when they intend to make significant advancements.

"On the flip side, in 2025, I know we’ve made progress, and I believe the team is demonstrating that. However, the extent of this progress in fighting for a podium is, to be honest, relatively unlikely. But who knows? I prefer to stay optimistic and wait at least until the tests or the first race to assess our position."
