Dietrich Mateschitz’s son, the founder of Red Bull, has acquired the unique collection of Formula 1 cars that Bernie Ecclestone recently placed for sale. The 94-year-old former F1 CEO explained to the Telegraph why he decided to sell the 69 cars, which are valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. "With a bit of luck, I might have two or three more years, and I don’t want Fabiana to handle all of this," he stated. "I’m still largely in control, so I can do as I please. Perhaps in a year, I won't be able to."
The amount Mark Mateschitz, heir to his father’s energy drink business, paid for the collection has not been revealed. However, car dealer Tom Hartley Jr., who was responsible for the sale, claimed: "By several multiples, it is the highest sale price ever recorded. We received proposals from around the world, including from two distinct sovereign wealth funds. However, I believe the collection has found its way to the best owner, and to the buyer that Bernie preferred the most."
