Last summer, the transfer of Red Bull Racing sports director Jonathan Wheatley to Sauber was officially announced. The British specialist was supposed to take over as head of Sauber in July 2025, but today Sauber officially confirmed that Wheatley will take up his duties on April 1, and will make his debut as team leader at the Japanese Grand Prix.
In his new position, Jonathan Wheatley, as well as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer Mattia Binotto, will report directly to Gernot Delner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sauber Motorsport AG.
Whitley and Binotto are jointly responsible for the success of the team within a framework that gives them clearly defined roles and responsibility for achieving results.
Jonathan Wheatley started working in Formula 1 in the early 1990s at the Benetton team, where he rose to become chief mechanic. In addition, he worked as the chief mechanic for the Renaut team for three years, and in 2006 joined Red Bull Racing as sports director. Wheatley worked in the Milton Keynes team until the end of 2024.
