Carlos Sainz expressed his pleasant surprise upon stepping into the cockpit of his new car for the 2025 season. After Ferrari replaced the Spaniard with Lewis Hamilton, Sainz found himself overlooked by top teams Mercedes and Red Bull, ultimately choosing between midfield competitors Alpine or Williams for the upcoming season. Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore believes Sainz has made a "mistake," yet the four-time grand prix winner topped the overall timesheets at the conclusion of the sole pre-season test in Bahrain.
"You can't claim that the times from the pre-season test directly indicate the power balance for the 2025 season. However, if the car platform is subpar, achieving a good time is unlikely, even with reduced fuel. Thus, Williams recording the fastest time is evidence of the progression from last year’s model," he added.
Sainz admits he anticipated a more challenging season in 2025. "I realized that it was a better car and a stronger team than I had anticipated," he shared with Spanish broadcaster DAZN. "We were quick, and I was able to adapt swiftly."
A few weeks prior, team boss James Vowles stated that securing even regular points would be a challenge for Williams in 2025, but he has since adjusted his expectations. "It's tough to predict positions," he remarked. "However, what matters is that we should consistently have the car competing for points. We are not targeting specific results for particular weekends this year. Our focus is on implementing development and processes that yield long-term benefits. That’s how you contend for world championships."
Sainz, 30, is equally optimistic. "We are undergoing a transformation that brings about positive feelings," he stated. "Sponsors are coming on board, we're hiring engineers, and people are eager to join the project. This indicates that Williams is serious and has a clear vision for returning to the top."
