Norris 'not prepared' for the 'pressure' of an F1 title - reports

"When Lando attempts to find the final tenths..."

Formula 1’s international media is already questioning Lando Norris's readiness to become a world champion. The 2024 runner-up returned from the winter break eager to learn from his rivalry with Max Verstappen last year, and with a repeat opportunity on the horizon, he now finds himself in the standout car of the field. However, after showcasing his skills in Australia and becoming the first non-Verstappen champion leader in a long time, the 25-year-old has faced challenges in China. Simultaneously, teammate Oscar Piastri achieved his first career pole position.

"Piastri is asserting himself at McLaren, which is crucial for him," noted RTBF correspondent Gaetan Vigneron. Norris acknowledges the McLaren is "definitely the fastest car" so far in 2025, yet he also admits to struggling with its handling. Team principal Andrea Stella states that Norris and Piastri have differing driving styles. "For Lando, the issues are a greater constraint due to his driving style and his effort to maximize laptimes.

"Regarding both the tyres and the car, there is little we can change. We must simply adapt," the Italian added. Stella mentioned that during the sprint, Piastri "managed it better" in terms of tyre wear. "However, it's true that Oscar experienced less impact from dirty air," he explained.

"But when Lando seeks the final tenths, he encounters the behavior I mentioned earlier. It actually works better for him when he drives at 99 percent of his ability. As soon as he aims for 100 percent, it backfires."

The media, however, speculates whether Norris is already feeling the weight of being the 2025 favorite. "Norris and the Formula 1 pressure," read a headline from the German news agency DPA. "Not ready for the world championship title?" Bianca Garloff, writing for f1-insider.com, concurred: "Is Lando Norris really prepared for the world championship?"

Sky Italia was interviewing Norris after qualifying when Mercedes’ in-form George Russell approached and told his compatriot to "smile." Norris appeared to be a mix of amused and irritated, as noted by the reporter afterward. Meanwhile, an article from Austria’s Kleine Zeitung stated: "With pole position in China, Oscar Piastri emphasized his title aspirations this year. Many believe the Australian is more capable than Lando Norris at McLaren," the article claimed.
