Andretti: Perez is a real candidate for Cadillac F1
Mario Andretti confirmed that he considers Sergio Perez to be a very real candidate for a place in the new Cadillac F1 team, which will start the World Championship in 2026.
The 85-year-old motorsport veteran now serves as a consultant for the General Motors factory project and is a member of the Cadillac F1 board of directors.
"Of course, this could be one of the options," Andretti said in an interview with ESPN, referring to the Mexican's invitation. – But I would be happy to tell you something, but we prefer to keep this information a secret, because we don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Maybe none of this will come true, and this applies to several areas."
The same Andretti said earlier that, ideally, one of the drivers of the future team should be a high-class professional with experience in Formula 1, and it should also include a representative of American motorsport.
When asked about possible American candidates, Andretti admitted: "There are too many options. And the second place in the team will definitely be taken by one of the experienced riders, with whom it will be possible to sign a contract.
We all know that the choice is quite obvious in this regard. Probably, if we think about it realistically, we can have a list of three riders from which we will choose. But I won't say who exactly will be included in it.
We are actively thinking about this topic now, and I will not have the last word here, but I will also be able to have some influence on this decision. I repeat, I am not the only one responsible for him ..."
Sergio Perez parted ways with the Red Bull Racing team after the end of the 2024 season, when his results clearly began to decline, and now, according to him, he wants to take a six-month break to think about what he will do in the future. At the same time, he assures that "many doors are open to him."
