They went out: We've done our best, but it's not enough.
Alpine's best result at the Japanese Grand Prix was Pierre Gasly's thirteenth place, while his teammate Jack Duane finished fifteenth. The team from Enstone remains the only one with no points earned after three stages of the season.
Pierre Gasly (13th): "Today was not our race, and we definitely need to analyze a few points. It seems we've done everything we could in terms of speed. The car was well controlled and well balanced, and now we know in which areas we lack pace.
The first round turned out to be intense – a risky fight with Fernando Alonso, as a result of which I lost one position. But it was still fun.
I lost some time at the pit stop, but the team will analyze everything. We know how important the track position is in Suzuka in terms of traffic and pace control. We did our best, but it wasn't enough to earn points.
Next week we will have a chance to bounce back in Bahrain, because we looked good on this track during the pre-season tests. The weather will be different, so we have the opportunity to reboot. I hope the result will be much better."
Jack Duane (15th): "It's good to drive another full race distance, gain experience and understand the car better. Taking into account the starting position, we chose a more aggressive racing strategy with a start on Soft tires, which allowed us to attack and win back positions by "trimming". But this decision meant that I had to drive a long second leg on Hard tires [38 laps] and defend at the end.
I think I did a good job keeping Nico Hulkenberg behind, but it's a pity that I couldn't keep Carlos Sainz on the new Soft tyres.
It's positive that I managed to regain positions on a track that is difficult to overtake, and my race pace was high, although I didn't manage to work on a car with a full tank in training this weekend.
We have a few days to rest before the next race. I'm looking forward to the Bahrain stage, where the weather conditions will be radically different."
