Berman: I hope I'm physically stronger than I was a year ago.
Oliver Berman made his debut in March last year at the Jeddah stage, when he was unexpectedly assigned to replace Carlos Sainz, who was out of action, and everyone remembers that the reserve Ferrari driver did a great job and earned points for 7th place.
At the FIA press conference in Saudi Arabia today, Oliver, now driving for Haas F1, was asked to share his memories of that weekend.
Oliver Berman: "It was a crazy weekend! And now I just hope that I am physically stronger than I was 12 months ago, because that race was really difficult. Now I'm back on this track, and, of course, I'm experiencing a special feeling here. I've always enjoyed driving on this track, and this is the third time I'm going to do it, but I've done well here before.
Of course, after my debut in Formula 1, she became even more special to me. I don't want to get ahead of things, but the track is really cool, the surface here provides good grip, so it's fun to drive on it. The walls are very close, and it's always interesting.
The speeds in Jeddah are very high, full concentration is needed here, and it seems to me that many riders consider the stage in Saudi Arabia to be one of the highlights of the season.
I am happy with the way my business is going this year, although the situation in Bahrain was not quite clear, because qualifying there was very bad, but during the race we were lucky that a safety car drove onto the track. And in China and Japan, we deservedly earned points – it's very good that already in two races in a row, both Haas cars finished in the top ten.
Of course, it wasn't easy in Australia, but we quickly made changes for the better, and the team quickly developed and implemented minor technical improvements, which made it possible to achieve a more stable behavior of the VF-25. And now we're able to squeeze a lot more out of the car, which is great.
However, it is still unclear what the upcoming weekend holds for us. For example, before Suzuki, we didn't have any special expectations, but we still made it to the qualifying final and scored points. I wasn't sure about Bahrain either, but Estban Okon, my teammate, could have made it to the final there, but he had problems.
In general, I know that we have a potential opportunity to work well this weekend. We'll see how events develop, and for now I prefer to refrain from making predictions."
