The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix debuted at the end of the 2021 season, becoming the fourth stage in the calendar in the Middle East. Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar will be joined by the Jeddah circuit, which corresponds to the ambitions of the largest country in the Arabian Peninsula.
At first, the design of the track was presented as part of the grandiose Kiddiya Park city, 45 kilometers from Riyadh, but work was just beginning there, and the race wanted to be held early.
To do this, we decided to build a temporary urban highway in Jeddah, and later move the stage to Kiddia when everything is ready there. In 2020, Saudi Aramco, the national oil company, became a global partner of Formula 1, and in the fall, when the situation with the pandemic returned to normal, a ten-year contract for the stage was signed immediately.
Jeddah is the second largest city in the kingdom after Riyadh, its economic capital, the most important port on the Red Sea, on the coast of which there is the Corniche resort area, where the architectural firm of Hermann Tilke was commissioned in just a year to design and build a wide, modern and high—speed highway on the waterfront.
Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Al Faisal, President of the Saudi Arabian Automobile Federation: "Given the time we have, we realized that it would be best to contact Tilke directly.
We didn't want it to be just another race. I wanted to create something special, unlike anything else, so that our stage would be the best. We don't need a boring race without overtaking – we want the audience to enjoy it, and that's what we're doing the Formula 1 stage for."
Deadlines were tight. Construction began in April 2021, and the first Grand Prix was scheduled for December. The work went on around the clock, the crews were constantly changing – in fifty-degree heat, local legislation limits the time spent in direct sunlight.
3,000 contractors from 50 countries participated in the work. 37,000 tons of asphalt, 600,000 tons of cement, 30,000 square meters of brick and 1,400 tons of glass were laid. There are seven grandstands around the track, and it is fully illuminated to hold races after dark.
Route features
The Tilke bureau was given a difficult task – to create the best track in the Middle East – high-speed, with overtaking opportunities, difficult for riders and unlike other tracks in the desert – Yas Marina, Sahir and Losail. The configuration was designed by Carsten Tilke, Hermann's son. More than 600 lighting poles have been installed for artificial lighting.
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit is the longest urban circuit on the calendar. With a lap length of 6175 meters, it is second only to Spa this season. During the design, we tried to avoid the 90-degree turns typical of urban trails by integrating three DRS zones with the possibility of competing for a position in the most beautiful places.
The configuration includes a record number of 27 turns surrounded by barriers, which at an average speed of 252 km/h – higher than at Silverstone – will make the race truly vibrant. One of the most spectacular and difficult turns is the profiled 13th with a slope of 12 degrees, with an estimated speed of up to 322 km/h.
Jeddah is a track of powerful engines, with the accelerator pedal fully depressed, riders will drive 79% of the lap. The slowest turn is the second one, which runs at about 90 km/h.
The embankment highway has typical problems for this location – sand on the asphalt and a change in wind direction day and night. The cars will be adjusted to a low level of downforce, it is important to minimize drag. There is a high probability of a safety car leaving.

Sets of tires issued to teams for the weekend
At this year's stage in Saudi Arabia, the teams will receive tires one step softer than last season – C3, C4 and C5 in the role of Hard, Medium and Soft.
Mario Isola, Pirelli: "Based on our experience from last year and the information gathered during the development of the new line-ups, we wanted to give teams and drivers more opportunities to choose their strategy options.
In 2024, 18 of the 20 racers started on Medium (C3), and after the safety car on lap 7, 14 of them immediately switched to Hard, which reached the finish line. The softer lineups this year will allow for more variety in the selection of one and two pit stops."

Antonelli, Bortoleto, Duane, Lawson and Hajjar did not participate in the Saudi Grand Prix.
Lando Norris: "I'm glad to be back on the track in Jeddah, it's cool and very fast for an urban one. We are preparing for the upcoming weekend with a fighting spirit. The team continues to move forward, and we will try to do our best.
I trust the team, all its specialists working both on the track and at the base in Woking, because I know that they are working around the clock so that we can cope with our tasks in Saudi Arabia."
