Kimi Antonelli wins sprint qualification
Non-cloudy skies. Dry. The air is +28...29C, the highway is +49...45C
In the 2025 season, the Miami stage was again held in the Saturday sprint format, and on Friday, after a single hour-long practice session in which Oscar Piastri turned out to be the best, the riders conducted a short qualification for the sprint.
Pirelli brought tires to the stage a step softer than a year ago – C3, C4 and C5 in the role of Hard, Medium and Soft. By the beginning of qualifying, the asphalt temperature had risen by 10 degrees compared to the morning training session, and then decreased slightly, which affected the performance of the tires.
In the first session, everyone went to Medium. There was a traffic jam in the pit lane, and Lawson was released from the pits right in front of Duane - both had to stop to avoid contact.
Verstappen was the first to lead the protocol, then Norris and Antonelli were ahead of him – all three fit into the tenth.
Hadjar's time was removed for violating the boundaries of the highway, Bortoleto hit the wall without consequences for the car.
Russell showed the best time, completing a lap in 1:27.688. Stroll, Duane, Tsunoda (for the first time in the season), Bortoleto and Berman were eliminated from further competition.
In the second session, everyone went back to Medium. Piastri immediately set a new benchmark – 1:27.354, but Verstappen drove faster – 1:27.245, and then Norris reserved the best time for himself – 1:27.109.
Gasly touched the wall in turn 16 without consequences for the car. Sainz ruined the lap by locking the tyres in turn 11. Both of them, as well as Hulkenberg, Okon and Lawson did not qualify for the finals.
In the final, everyone went to Soft. Verstappen started the first attempt with 1:27.070, Russell responded with a new absolute track record of 1:26.791 (the previous one was set in 2023 and belonged to Max – 1:26.814).
The rest of the riders missed the first attempt and went for one fastest lap at the end of the session. First Verstappen, then Norris and Antonelli drove faster, and Kimi's result was the best.
Mercedes debutant Andrea Kimi Antonelli won the sprint qualification for the first time in his career, becoming the youngest pole holder in Formula 1 history, although formally pole position will be awarded only in the main qualifying.
Oscar Piastri, the leader of the individual standings, will share the front row at the start of the sprint with Kimi, while Lando Norris and Max Verstappen will start from the second row.
