Miami Grand Prix: Piastri leads in practice
Non-cloudy skies. Dry. Air +27...28C, highway +38C
The weekend in Miami is once again taking place in the format of a Saturday sprint, Friday's training session was the only one and extremely important for setting up the cars, because after it the qualification for the sprint will take place.
The track around the stadium is rarely used for racing, the cars lacked traction, but the racers immediately went faster than a year ago.
Many people spent the beginning of the session working with new products. Only Verstappen got a new bottom at Red Bull Racing, Tsunoda worked with the previous version.
Pirelli brought tires to the stage a step softer than a year ago – C3, C4 and C5 in the role of Hard, Medium and Soft. Most of the time, the riders worked with Medium, and at the end of the session they switched to Soft.
Norris had to return to the pits to hand over the tools he had left in the cockpit to the mechanics – the stewards reviewed the incident after the session and limited themselves to a warning. Hulkenberg drove into the safety zone to avoid contact with the slow Williams car. Duane locked the tires on braking before turn 17.
Okon and Norris almost collided. Esteban was driving slowly along the trajectory before turn 17, and Lando was catching up with him, who began to shift to the left to overtake the slow Haas car, but at that moment Esteban shifted to the left to free up the trajectory. Lando had to brake hard and twist the steering wheel to the right to avoid contact. The Haas driver received a warning, and his team was fined 7,500 euros for not warning Esteban in time about Norris approaching from behind.
Five minutes before the end, the session was stopped with red flags – Oliver Berman's car from Haas F1 froze on the track after turning around and making contact with the wall. The impact was small, but the car could have been damaged, it was facing traffic, and they decided to evacuate it.
In red flag mode, the session time has expired. The protocol was headed by the leader of the individual standings Oscar Piastri, who completed a lap in 1:27.128.
