Andretti stated that Cadillac has not yet signed Sergio Perez.
"If a more advantageous opportunity comes along, we want to ensure we don't overlook it."
F1 icon Mario Andretti asserts that Cadillac is not in a hurry to finalize its driver lineup for 2026. At a glamorous red carpet event in Miami Beach on Saturday night, the newly announced 11th Formula 1 team for the upcoming season and beyond was introduced. There were speculations that the event might include an official statement regarding the signing of ex-Red Bull driver Sergio Perez. However, 1978 world champion Andretti, who serves as a consultant and advisor to the GM-affiliated team, stated that Cadillac is taking its time. "First of all, a driver must be available," he mentioned to Sky Deutschland, amidst further rumors that the 35-year-old Perez may be discussing possibilities with two other teams for a return in 2026. Meanwhile, Perez's billionaire supporter Carlos Slim is also present in Miami this weekend. "It would be a great narrative for the American market since he is very well-known," former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher commented regarding the Perez chatter. "He has extensive knowledge of car development. He has also been part of new, smaller teams in the past. Plus, he brings sponsorship funds with him. His break might have been beneficial. Things have been challenging for him recently at Red Bull." Cadillac is openly considering an American driver, primarily Colton Herta, for one of the seats, while also requiring a teammate with genuine F1 experience. "Experience is crucial," acknowledged Andretti, 85. "However, when evaluating the available driver pool, it's essential to seize opportunities as late as possible, as we don't want to miss any excellent chances." Nevertheless, he acknowledges that drivers like Perez or Valtteri Bottas are appealing. "We have an idea of who we would prefer in the back of our minds, but if a better opportunity comes up, we don't want to overlook it," Andretti emphasizes. "We can't make any commitments just yet. There are certainly many interested drivers eager to join us."
