Safnauer plans to create a new Formula 1 team

In 2026, the Cadillac team will make its debut in Formula 1, and thus the number of participants will increase to eleven. Otmar Safnauer, who led Racing Point/Aston Martin and Alpine at the time, believes that there is a place for a twelfth team in the World Championship, and he has already started working on the project.

Otmar Safnauer: "When I was 28 years old, there were twelve teams in Formula 1. I signed my first contract in Formula 1 with BAR in 1997, and then there were even more participants in the championship, so I had to prequalify.

That's why I think there's a place for the twelfth team now, too. And if it is decided to expand the list of participants even further, I want to be ready for this and submit an application that will be successful. That's what I'm working on right now.

Cadillac became the eleventh participant, but as far as I understand, they were chosen from five other applications. Therefore, I can quite imagine that if Formula 1 wants to invite another team, there will be more than one application. I want to do everything possible to make my application the best, if Formula 1 starts the process of selecting a new team."
