WEC: Ferrari's winning double at Spa, Mick Schumacher on the podium
The 6-hour race, the third stage of the WEC season, has just finished at the classic Belgian circuit in Spa, and it ended with a winning double by Ferrari.
But it is equally important to note that the Alpine team also had a great race and fought for 2nd place until the last meters of the race. As a result, Mick Schumacher crossed the finish line in third less than a second behind the No. 50 Ferrari, and this is also a very decent result.
The victory went to the No. 51 crew of the Ferrari AF Corse factory team, which is represented by Alessandro Pierre Guidi, James Calado and Antonio Giovinazzi.
"The weekend didn't start well for us, we crashed the car in the second practice session, but we didn't give up," Antonio commented after a triumphant finish. "We had a good qualifying yesterday, and in today's race the car worked perfectly, the teammates did not disappoint, the team implemented effective tactics perfectly, so the Belgian stage was an excellent preparation for Le Mans!"
This is the third consecutive victory of the Ferrari AF Corse in three stages of the season, it confidently leads in the WEC team standings, and in And ahead is the No. 51 crew. Today's success of this trio was witnessed by almost 100,000 fans who filled the stands of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
The crew achieved success thanks to the precise implementation of the ideal tactical scheme: hypercar No. 51 was in the lead, 10 minutes before the finish, turned into the pit lane for a short refueling and returned to the track in the first position. This was also facilitated by the fact that several rivals had to spend more time in the pits.
The crew of Niklas Nielsen, Antonio Fuoco and Miguel Molina finished second, starting from pole position, and they reached the end of the race literally on the last drops of gasoline. Mick Schumacher did not have time to overtake Nielsen for two reasons: firstly, he was riding on tires that had already lasted 47 laps, and secondly, the race was simply over. And Nielsen was lucky that at the last stage of the 6-hour marathon, the fight on the track was twice interrupted by yellow flags, and during these periods fuel consumption was clearly lower.
Adding to the joy of the Ferrari fans was the fact that Vista AF Corse won the race in the LMGT3 class in a 296 GT3 sports car. Crew No. 21, consisting of Francois Herrier, Alessio Rovers and Simon Mann, scored their first victory of the season, and they did it more than confidently, 40 seconds ahead of their closest pursuers, crew No. 88. The German Proton Competition team, driving a Ford Mustang.
The next stage of the season will be the 24 Hours of Le Mans - the fourth stage of the season will be held at the Sarthe circuit on June 14-15, so today's race in Spa was something like the last rehearsal for this main event of the season.
