James Voules: It was all about the tires today

Williams hoped for more, but according to the results of qualifying in Monaco, only Alex Albon made it to the final. However, Carlos Sainz lost quite a bit to his partner.…

James Voules, team principal: "It was all about the tyres today. They didn't work properly either for Carlos in the second part of qualifying, or for Alex in the final. We still have a lot to learn and a lot to understand, but tomorrow it won't be relevant anymore. Now the main thing is to figure out how two mandatory pit stops will help us win back the race."

Alex Albon (10th): "I was hoping for more. I need to understand why I did a lap half a second faster in the second part of qualifying than in the final. We showed good pace in all three practice sessions, but the tyres lost stability in qualifying. In the second session, it seemed to me that they were working, but in the final, the grip deteriorated again.

Even though the race will include two mandatory pit stops, it will still be manageable to some extent, so it will be interesting."

Carlos Sainz (11th): "For me, the weekend in Monaco was difficult from the very beginning. The car had enough speed to qualify for the final, but for some reason the Soft tires didn't always work. It was like a lottery, and in the second session we couldn't get them to work.

It's frustrating, but tomorrow we'll have an interesting race with two mandatory pit stops. Let's try to recoup!"
