Wolff provides reassurance to Russell regarding his expiring contract.
"George and I completely understand how this will unfold."
Toto Wolff has once again assured his top driver not to stress about his contract situation. Excluding Max Verstappen, Mercedes’ George Russell, currently fourth in the standings behind the dominant McLarens and Verstappen, has been the most consistent driver of 2025 so far. Nonetheless, team principal Wolff is not yet prepared to finalize a new contract, likely keeping the possibility open in case Verstappen departs from Red Bull. Last year, Wolff took his time as well, waiting until September and Monza to officially sign Lewis Hamilton’s successor, Kimi Antonelli. Will Russell, aged 27, have to endure a similar wait again, solely due to Verstappen's potential availability? "No," Wolff asserted in Monaco. "Definitely not for that long. George and I are completely aligned on how this will proceed, and we are 100 percent in agreement. There's no intention to prolong this, as that's not our approach." Dutch racing figure Tom Coronel believes Russell's new contract will be finalized soon, coinciding precisely with a particular exit clause in Verstappen’s Red Bull agreement. "I think the other sides are just biding their time," he stated to Viaplay. "Max has had discussions with Toto Wolff, and we know that. Options are being created, and at a certain point, Max will need to decide. I believe that moment will come after Monaco."
