Fernando Alonso became the ambassador of the circuit in Barcelona
Aston Martin racer Fernando Alonso has become the ambassador of the Barcelona circuit, which has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991.
The current contract with Formula 1 expires in 2026, and the owners of the circuit are making efforts to keep Barcelona on the World Cup calendar. They hope that inviting a world-renowned racer will help in future negotiations on a new agreement.
Fernando Alonso: "It is a great honor and privilege for me to become the ambassador of the Catalunya circuit in Barcelona, which is special for me and all the Spanish fans, because it has given us all so much joy.
The modernization was necessary in order to have a secure future and adapt to the current requirements and standards of Formula 1, which are already represented on the tracks in other countries. The upgrade has taken the track to a new level with a promising future. I think Catalunya should stay on the calendar, not only because of its infrastructure, but also because of its traditions.
There are several types of trails on the calendar, including urban ones in major cities and in the Middle East, which have incredible possibilities. But there are also historical tracks with long-standing traditions in Formula 1, on which the history of the sport was written. All options need to be weighed, but I believe that the historic tracks should remain in the championship."
Another Spanish Formula 1 driver, Carlos Sainz, is the ambassador of the Madrid circuit, which is scheduled to host the debut race in 2026.
