Hamilton 'wept' after reaching a new low in Spain.
"Lewis Hamilton's dream of joining Ferrari is reportedly ending in disappointment, as stated by the prominent German newspaper Bild. The report claimed, 'The Formula 1 world has never witnessed Lewis Hamilton as devastated as he was after the Spanish GP.' It noted that the Ferrari driver shed tears before regaining his composure to address questions from international journalists.
The 40-year-old, however, had difficulty concealing his overwhelming emotions when speaking to the media, labeling the Barcelona event as 'the worst race I’ve ever participated in my life.' Hamilton resorted to giving only brief responses—just two or three words—prompting a journalist to push back, to which the seven-time world champion replied, 'What do you want me to say?'
His expectations were high following the qualifying rounds, especially after reporting on the radio that, 'Something is wrong with this car.' By Sunday, when a journalist asked him about the situation, he stated, 'There’s no point explaining it. It’s not your fault. I just don’t know what to say.'
Nonetheless, he seemed to shy away from blaming the car entirely, particularly as teammate Charles Leclerc had secured podium finishes in the last two races. 'I’m sure they won’t,' Hamilton said when informed that Ferrari surely had answers for him soon. 'It was probably just me.'
Nico Rosberg, who retired from Formula 1 after winning the championship in 2016 against Hamilton, expressed doubts about maintaining the intensity required to consistently outperform his British rival. Now working for Sky in Barcelona, Rosberg commented, 'What we’re seeing from Lewis right now continues the trend from last year. George Russell often had the upper hand, and this is carrying on at Ferrari. He’s always lacking that critical final bit of speed.'
Rosberg further added, 'What’s going on? My instinct tells me that even if you’re the most successful driver ever, there comes a time when you’re not as fast as you once were. We’re talking about age here, and at 40, that moment inevitably arrives. Even a loss of a tenth of a second is significant because Hamilton is competing against the best drivers of the next generation.'"
