'Ice-boy' Piastri opting for a 'dull' path toward the 2025 championship.

"It’s not the conclusion of the championship"

Max Verstappen's erratic behavior towards the end of the race captured attention, while Oscar Piastri is solidifying his bid for the 2025 drivers’ world championship. Both Verstappen and his Red Bull team principal, Dr. Helmut Marko, acknowledged post-race in Barcelona that McLaren is clearly leading this year's competition. "It’s not the conclusion of the championship," Marko asserted. "But it is becoming increasingly challenging." Verstappen finished P3 behind the two McLarens and is now 49 points behind after the ninth of 24 races. Furthermore, even with the FIA’s stricter new front wing flexibility tests now in effect, the Woking-based team appears to be gaining even more distance from Red Bull. "The gap to McLaren is becoming alarming," Marko remarked, "especially since we can’t match McLaren’s pace despite our car improvements. We're about two or three tenths slower, and even Verstappen can’t close that sort of gap."

However, the 2025 narrative is not solely about Verstappen versus McLaren, but increasingly features a contest between Piastri and Lando Norris. It is the 24-year-old Australian—less experienced than Norris—who has quietly gained a 10-point lead. His performance in Barcelona was indicative of his personality, reminding many of Kimi Raikkonen’s demeanor. "I’m not sure I want to be called Ice-Boy," Piastri commented when faced with the nickname in Spain. Dutch figure Tom Coronel, however, believes Piastri's calm management of the Spanish GP situation might warrant that title. "This was classic Piastri," he told Viaplay. "He doesn’t make much noise, but that quiet demeanor has earned him a solid lead in the championship. When he needed to push, it was evident he still had more in reserve. We thought Norris was closing in, but he always had it completely under control."

Piastri even chose not to fully express his thoughts regarding Verstappen’s purported 'battering ram' maneuver on George Russell—despite seemingly sharing his true feelings with Norris privately. "That’s not what he said earlier," Norris chuckled after Piastri claimed he required more "context" to form an opinion. Former F1 driver Giedo van der Garde remarked late on Sunday: "Boring—that’s how you drive to a championship. He approached it that way in Formula 2 as well," said the Dutchman. "Piastri secured championships in Formula 3 and Formula 2 in consecutive seasons because when he has the opportunity to win, he does so just like now. If he doesn't have that chance, he simply settles for second or third place instead. He remains composed, and that’s how you clinch a championship."
