Keke Rosberg, 75, acknowledges that his health is deteriorating.
"The COVID period was somewhat perplexing."
Formula 1 icon Keke Rosberg acknowledges that he is not in great health. The 76-year-old Finnish driver may be the 1982 world champion, but to a younger crowd, he is perhaps better recognized as the father of fellow title holder Nico Rosberg. When a correspondent from Finland’s Apu magazine arrived at Rosberg's Monaco residence for the interview, the receptionist inquired about the appointment. "Nico?" she was quoted as asking. "No, Keke," came the response. "Oh, Keke!"
Despite having guided his son Nico into Formula 1 after mentoring Mika Hakkinen, Keke has turned down nearly all media offers in recent years. He acknowledges that he has been struggling with his health for a considerable time. "The COVID period was a bit confusing," stated Rosberg. "I'm uncertain whether this was due to isolation or if there’s some form of post-COVID condition."
Rosberg senior admits that adjusting to his declining health has been challenging. "I used to have a list of things that still needed to be completed," he reflected. "I still have one now, but it consists of things that can no longer be accomplished."
In another development, former world champion Jody Scheckter, who won the title in 1979, informed Corriere della Sera that he is currently unable to drive at all due to lacking an Italian driver's license. The 75-year-old South African moved to Italy about 18 months ago and now must retake a driving test. "I chose Italy as my home - this is where I wish to reside," said the ex-Ferrari driver. "The issue is that my Italian is very poor. I can’t possibly pass the test."
