Coronel: Verstappen is 'definitely' remaining with Red Bull.

An expert in Formula 1 who is close to Max Verstappen believes that the Dutch driver will remain with Red Bull next year. The four-time world champion effectively diminished his 2025 title aspirations during the recent race in Barcelona, where he received a penalty from the FIA for an apparent intentional crash involving George Russell. There were speculations that Verstappen might be attempting to activate a contract exit clause to move to Mercedes or Aston Martin for 2026. However, Red Bull advisor Dr. Helmut Marko dismissed these claims as "nonsense." He remarked to the Kleine Zeitung newspaper, "For one thing, he could go about it much more discreetly."

Indeed, the 27-year-old Verstappen showed a much brighter demeanor upon arriving in Canada and even confronted a reporter who pointed out a team member for the strategic mistake that led to the late-race turmoil in Barcelona. Sky UK reporter Ted Kravitz mentioned, "Since Jonathan Wheatley left, Stephen Knowles is now in that role." Verstappen responded sharply, "I don’t think it’s fair to single out one person, as that’s not the case. We analyze as a team what we can improve, and that's how we approach the situation in Barcelona. It’s unjust to blame one individual."

Dutch racing driver Tom Coronel, who is well-acquainted with Verstappen, believes that Verstappen’s defense of his team strongly indicates he is committed to staying in 2026. Coronel stated to Viaplay, "I can see that Max has made his decision, and that’s why he is defending Red Bull. He is not looking for another team, and it’s clear he intends to stay with Red Bull."

On the other hand, another analyst suggests an alternative possibility. When asked about what vehicle Verstappen may drive in 2026, Mathias Lauda, son of Niki Lauda, commented to Osterreich, "Wow, that's tough. I don’t think even Max knows yet. He might even say, ‘I’m taking a year off—I want to enjoy my new baby and spend more time at home.’" Lauda added, "During that time, he can assess which team has the best setup under the new regulations and choose a car that will allow him to compete for the title again. A year off could definitely benefit him."
