Italian taxi drivers responded to Toto Wolff
When Max Verstappen crashed into George Russell in Barcelona, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the Dutchman was piloting the car "like an angry taxi driver in Rome." The response from the Italian taxi drivers' union was not long in coming.
The president of the Rome Taxi Drivers Association, Loreno Bittarelli, accused Wolff of incorrectness and spreading false stereotypes: "Our drivers are better than Formula 1 drivers who could not stand an hour in Rome traffic jams. We maneuver between construction sites, motorcycles, electric scooters, and tour buses.
Rome is a jungle, it's much more difficult to drive a car here than on Formula 1 tracks. And the last thing we want to do is get into an accident, because it wastes the whole working day."
Nicola di Giacobbe, a representative of the taxi drivers' union, added humorously: "Here in Rome, we drive as slowly as Mercedes in Formula 1."
