"We were roughly as quick as Piastri."

Red Bull has re-entered the competition in Canada, according to an optimistic statement from team advisor Dr. Helmut Marko. Just days ago, the 82-year-old indicated that Max Verstappen had little chance of outpacing the McLarens this weekend in Montreal. However, despite Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris having several updates to their cars, they struggled to make an impact during Friday practice, while Mercedes appears poised for a strong performance. Some believe that McLaren's challenges in Canada stem from the high-drag nature of their otherwise superior 2025 car, possibly due to its highly effective cooling design. Verstappen managed to clock the fastest time overall in FP1 before dropping back in the later session on Friday. Marko commented, "If the car performs as well as it did initially, we'll be competitive." He noted, "Interestingly, the adjustments we made didn’t yield as significant an effect over a longer run as they did on a single lap. In that regard, we’re on par with Piastri." In a different interview, Marko remarked, "We were about as fast as Piastri, and tire degradation was also minimal. Thus, we are looking forward to the rest of the weekend with a sense of optimism. I truly believe we are among the fastest."
