Elbon: Only Max can drive Red Bull cars
After Daniel Ricciardo left Red Bull Racing at the end of 2018, Max Verstappen's teammates were Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Liam Lawson and now Yuki Tsunoda. All of them, with the exception of Perez, had problems competing at the same level as Verstappen.
Alex Elbon has his own theory about why his teammates are lagging behind the current world champion. The Williams racer explains this by the extreme difference in the handling of the cars of the Racing Bulls and Red Bull Racing teams.
Alex Albon: "It seems to me that the Red Bull cars are very sharp to drive, and only Max can pilot them. I'm saying this based on my experience and the problems I've had. Now I have more experience, and I can work around these problems, but for most riders, this behavior of the car does not seem natural.
I remember the 2019 Racing Bulls car – it was very balanced in handling and very stable, which gave me great confidence. Based on what I see, their current car is the same.
This is the car for debutants that it should be, because the team was created for young racers. And then they get behind the wheel of Red Bull Racing, which has very extreme controls. In fact, the rider is transferred from one of the easiest to drive and forgiving of all mistakes of the car behind the wheel of the most difficult.
Obviously, Max likes this feature of the car, and he is able to get the most out of it. But it's not so easy for a young driver, being number two, to find an approach to this car."
