Vowles has signed a new contract with Williams Racing.
"Now we have the foundation to pursue greatness in the years ahead."
Team Principal James Vowles has secured a new long-term contract with Atlassian Williams Racing, ensuring his leadership in the team’s quest for Formula 1 World Championship success. James joined Williams in 2023, becoming just the third Team Principal in the team's 48-year history. The 45-year-old Brit, whose birthday is tomorrow, transitioned from Mercedes after spending over two decades in F1, during which he played a crucial role in earning nine Constructors’ World Championships and over 120 race victories.
Since his arrival, he has led a comprehensive overhaul of Williams with a singular goal: to restore this Formula 1 icon to its winning ways. With the sustained support of Dorilton Capital – which will mark five years of ownership in August – the team is investing in the right personnel, technology, and infrastructure to reestablish themselves at the front of the grid. This ambitious revival strategy has drawn a top-tier driver roster featuring Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, numerous significant international brands including title sponsor Atlassian, elite engineering talent from across the F1 paddock, and an increasingly passionate global fanbase.
This vision and investment have propelled the team to its strongest season start since 2016. Atlassian Williams Racing is currently fifth in the Constructors’ Championship with 55 points – surpassing the points total of the previous three seasons combined. The announcement made today guarantees that Williams will have consistent leadership to progress towards championship victories once more.
Matthew Savage, Chairman of Atlassian Williams Racing and Dorilton Capital, stated: “We are excited that James has signed a new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing and committed to our joint mission. He has infused the effort to restore Williams to the top step of the podium with experience, energy, and strategic guidance. We’re not there yet, but the momentum building at Grove is palpable and we look forward to what’s ahead.”
James Vowles, Team Principal of Atlassian Williams Racing, commented: “I am thrilled to announce my new contract with Atlassian Williams Racing, which has truly felt like home since I arrived. This legendary team has already provided me with unforgettable moments, and we are all united in our goal of enhancing our legacy and winning World Championships again. Over the last two years, we have concentrated on strengthening our foundations, and now we have the platform to strive for greatness in the years to come.”
