Kyalami representatives are set to meet with F1 officials in Austria.
"We will announce our chosen promoter."
Kyalami is poised to make significant progress towards securing a spot on the Formula 1 calendar. While several other initiatives aim to incorporate the missing African representation into the yearly schedule, Kyalami, located near Johannesburg, recently received approval from the FIA for its upgrades to achieve 'Grade 1' circuit homologation for F1.
Now, South Africa's sports minister, Gayton McKenzie, is preparing for the next crucial step. "We will meet again with FOM next week in Austria," he informed eNCA, mentioning the Liberty Media-owned Formula One Management and the upcoming Austrian GP at the Red Bull Ring. "We want to submit an official bid. The following week, on July 1, we will announce our selected promoter. After that, it will all be in the hands of Formula 1."
Minister McKenzie remains optimistic. "We will have a circuit, we will have a promoter, and we will have the largest motorsport community in Africa," he stated. Kyalami, which hosted 21 F1 races until 1993, has engaged Apex Circuit Design—known for Miami's Grand Prix project—to manage the necessary modifications to prepare the circuit for F1.
