Wolff indicates that it is improbable for Antonelli to be let go.

"He will likely require a three-year program."

Toto Wolff has nearly dismissed the idea of removing rookie Kimi Antonelli from the Mercedes driver roster. Currently, the Italian media's coverage of Formula 1 focuses on two main stories: the difficulties at Ferrari and the bright prospects of 18-year-old Italian Antonelli. Although the young driver competes for Mercedes, the Italian press is celebrating his successful completion of high school. "The Mercedes driver finished his written tests alongside his classmates but advanced his oral exam to ensure he could be on track in Austria," reported La Gazzetta dello Sport.

While some speculate about Antonelli's future with Ferrari, his career has actually been supported by Wolff, who has known his family for many years. However, the potential addition of Max Verstappen next year could create challenges for Antonelli. An unnamed insider from Red Bull told Auto Motor und Sport, "If Wolff brings in Verstappen, he’ll be replacing two drivers. Verstappen would hinder Antonelli."

Nevertheless, Wolff has informed Bloomberg that dropping Antonelli is not really an option, particularly as he continues to adapt to the current F1 environment. "Managing the tyres has become extremely challenging," the Austrian commented. "It isn't sufficient to be quick for just one lap or during the race; it's essential to utilize the tyres without sliding and without causing them to overheat."

Wolff pointed to Oscar Piastri as an example, stating, "It took him a year and a half to reach Lando Norris's level, and as of 2025, he is finally ahead." He added, "Antonelli will likely require a three-year development program. That's the time a young driver typically needs to compete against a more seasoned and quicker teammate. However, we would never assign a seat to a driver we don’t view as a potential world champion."
