Sainz: On soft tires, the car loses grip on the track.
The Williams drivers posted the sixteenth and seventeenth fastest times in the second practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix. Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz said that the car lacks grip on soft tyres, while on the Hard and Medium compounds, the pace is fine.
Alex Albon (16th): "The results leave us a bit puzzled. It's not that the car feels terrible, but you can't really call it good either. We still need to figure this out, but the wind direction changed between sessions, and our car doesn't react well to crosswinds.
Still, the FW47's behavior on hard tyres is more or less okay, but it seems that as soon as we switch to soft tyres, we start falling behind. We need to analyze all this; although, we've been struggling with the softer compounds all year.
I think in the third practice, we’ll have to keep experimenting, because during previous race weekends we've always managed to improve at some point, but it's not always easy to understand what caused that.
According to the forecast, track temperatures should be much higher tomorrow, so things will change anyway. Nevertheless, we need to try to sort out a few issues. Still, I'm sure that if we manage to get the tyres working efficiently, the car will be capable of good pace."
Carlos Sainz (17th): "We’re in better shape than you might think from looking at the practice results. We’re pretty low on the timesheets, but I struggled a lot to put together a fast lap on soft tyres. It seems this trend has continued since the race in Imola.
The car is quick on the harder tyres, but something always happens when we switch to the C5 or C6 compound. We're not very competitive on the softs, but this morning on the Hard I was third, and on Medium I was actually first. But after switching to Soft, the grip just disappeared, so we need to work on that with the team.
We have good long-run pace, but before qualifying, we need to come up with a solution for the Softs. In third practice, we'll continue experimenting with the soft tyres."
