Vasseur is 'resting easy' amid ongoing Ferrari speculation.
"I would say the upgrade is progressing well."
As a recognizable figure from Ferrari transitions to McLaren, Frederic Vasseur's position at Ferrari remains precarious. According to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has been appointed as a director of McLaren's road car division, McLaren Automotive. At age 77, he has often expressed concerns about the lack of genuine leadership at Ferrari since his tenure, which was marked by remarkable success alongside figures like Jean Todt and Michael Schumacher.
Recently, Italian media inquired about how Vasseur is coping with the ongoing rumors regarding the non-renewal of his contract as the 57-year-old Frenchman confronts speculation. During the recent Canadian GP weekend, Vasseur responded to the authoritative Italian F1 journalists fueling these rumors regarding his potential departure.
So far in Austria, Vasseur's situation has only been a secondary topic, as Ferrari has rolled out a new floor upgrade aimed at bringing the 2025 car closer in performance to those of McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes. "I would say the upgrade is progressing well," Vasseur shared with Sky Italia, "but we need to analyze it thoroughly."
The broadcaster subsequently brought up the issue of his future. "We are concentrating on the work at hand," Vasseur asserted. "We need to remain united and focused as a team, and for now, we are performing well. Our complete attention is on this weekend."
When asked how he was managing to sleep amidst the swirling rumors, he replied: "Very well, thank you." Nevertheless, a report from Sky Italia suggests that Vasseur's fate may already be determined. "If that were not the case, they would have already issued a confirmation statement," the report noted. "While there is no official news, it's important to highlight that CEO (Benedetto) Vigna will surely be present at Silverstone. It’s evident that Ferrari cannot enter the summer break with uncertainties surrounding the team principal."
Former F1 driver and notable figure in Italian motorsport, Ivan Capelli, cautions against making hasty decisions. "In football," he commented, "changing the manager can be beneficial as it pertains to the athlete's mentality. However, in Formula 1, there is a need for careful planning, research, and design. Interrupting this process means starting from scratch, which can take years. Additionally, the drivers have publicly stated they work well with Vasseur, and their opinions hold significant weight," Capelli added.
