"Only the laptimes will be made available."
Spectators and the media will not be allowed at the first test featuring the completely new cars and engines for 2026. Unlike previous years, there will be significantly more on-track testing prior to the introduction of the radical new chassis and power unit regulations — with one test scheduled in Barcelona at the end of January, followed by two more in Bahrain in February. The Barcelona test has been consistently described by Formula 1, the FIA, and the Circuit de Catalunya as a five-day "private" session. This means no journalists, TV coverage, photographers, or fans will be present.
The reason for this, as explained by Auto Motor und Sport, is "because the completely new cars will likely encounter many initial issues." The German publication continued: "There are considerable concerns that a significant outcry may arise if the new cars do not meet expectations." There is worry that drivers might need to ease off the throttle halfway down the straights to recharge the batteries. Charles Leclerc recently disclosed in Austria that he was very disappointed after trying the 2026 Ferrari in the simulator.
"I noticed the headlines stating that Ferrari is struggling or something similar," he said at Silverstone, "but what I meant is that the new direction for us as drivers feels a bit less appealing and not as enjoyable to drive overall. I’m sure that if we are competitive, I will start to appreciate it much more. If not, then I will probably dislike it greatly."
Lance Stroll also expressed his views, stating it’s "a shame" that Formula 1 is racing full speed ahead towards "electrification." The Aston Martin driver mentioned, "We’ve had to reduce downforce just to keep the battery functioning." The Canadian added, "I don’t like the fundamental nature of the new regulations. Many drivers share my opinion, but they are not willing to express it due to political reasons."
