George Russell on FIA's decision to delay the start
In recent years, two racers—Antoine Hubert in Formula 2 in 2019 and Dilano van't Hoff in the FRECA series in 2023—died during rain races at Spa. Mercedes driver George Russell supported the decision of race officials to postpone the start of the Formula 1 race on Sunday until weather conditions improved.
George Russell: “Every driver wants to go as fast as possible. I enjoy racing in the rain. But the fact is, when you're cruising at over 200 miles per hour at O’Rourke, you literally see nothing—you might as well close your eyes. Racing in such conditions is just stupid.
The FIA knew that the weather would improve in an hour—this information was in the morning forecast—and made the completely right decision.”
