F1 arrives at the updated Hungaroring.
"The old mustiness has disappeared."
Formula 1 makes its return to a revamped Hungaroring this weekend as the Budapest circuit wraps up the Spa-Hungary double-header and signals the onset of the sport’s annual summer break. While complete renovations will only be finalized by the 40th anniversary in 2026, many new amenities are already in use. As noted by Speed Week upon arrival, "The old mustiness has vanished, and the new structures - like the pit area and the main grandstand - are contemporary and stylish."
The improved complex features a new pit building with 36 garages, a covered grandstand with 10,000 seats, as well as upgraded tunnels and hospitality areas. "I take pride in how the facility appears now," stated Zsolt Gyulay, Chairman and CEO of Hungaroring Sport Zrt. "This is not just an enhancement of infrastructure - it signifies the dawn of a new era for Hungarian motorsport."
Dr. Adam Schmidt, the State Secretary for Sport, concurred: "The Hungaroring merits this modern appearance for the 40th anniversary of Formula 1 racing. The racetrack and the Hungarian GP are integral to Hungary’s contemporary history and have given motorsport enthusiasts countless memorable experiences."
Gyulay confirmed that Sunday’s race is sold out and highlighted the upcoming Hollywood F1 film, commending the increased global attention: "I was very proud that the Hungaroring was prominent, and that our capital Budapest was positively referenced multiple times. In my view, few things enhance Hungary’s image internationally as much as this."
However, Dr. Helmut Marko from Red Bull expressed that the challenging circuit may not favor the team: "Hungary is likely to present some difficulties (compared to Spa) for us because of the track configuration and the usually high temperatures."
Spa winner Oscar Piastri is eager to return, saying, "I’m really excited to go back. It’s a fantastic city, a cool track as well - but once we hit the track, all that fades away instantly."
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who also finished on the podium at Spa, was more reserved regarding his anticipated performance. "I’m not sure. I would prefer to wait before making any declarations."
