Pirelli advances strategy changes with daring tyre modifications.
"Pirelli has announced a new strategy for tyre allocation for the remainder of the 2025 Formula 1 season, aimed at promoting greater diversity in race strategies and enhancing the excitement on the track. After an inconclusive test of the system during a rain-affected Belgian Grand Prix, motorsport director Mario Isola confirmed that the compound-skipping format will now be implemented in both Austin and Mexico City.
Isola mentioned to reporters in Hungary, 'We believe the idea was good. We conducted simulations, and by creating a larger gap between the Hard and Medium compounds, if a team opts for the Hard tyre and aims for a one-stop strategy, they will face penalties due to the slower tyre. Conversely, to adopt a more aggressive approach, teams must commit to a two-stop race.'
The exclusion of a compound will be trialed in two of the four races in the United States. At Austin, teams will utilize the C1 (Hard), C3 (Medium), and C4 (Soft) compounds, omitting the C2. In Mexico, the Hard tyre will shift to C2 instead of C3, again bypassing the middle compound.
Isola stated that these adjustments are part of a coordinated effort to enhance race dynamics: 'Some changes have been made in collaboration with the FIA and the championship organizer, based on our analysis of the data collected and simulation work.'
He continued, 'If a one-stop and a two-stop strategy result in very similar overall race times, teams tend to prefer the one-stop option to avoid the risks of traffic or pit errors. Therefore, we aim to encourage more variation.'
Additional changes include a softer tyre selection for Zandvoort and Baku, while Interlagos will adopt a harder approach compared to 2024, as the C5 compound was not utilized last year."
