Lando Norris: I haven't won yet.
In Hungary, Lando Norris changed his strategy mid-race and secured the victory, reducing the gap to his teammate in the fight for the championship…
Question: Lando, congratulations! Great race. Where does this victory rank among your others?
Lando Norris: I don’t have many wins, and this is the first time I’ve won by using a different strategy than most of the other drivers. The best part is that the idea — “Let’s try something different” — worked. Implementing this strategy wasn’t easy, but it brought the win. Honestly, for most of the second stint, I didn’t think it would work, but with each lap, my confidence grew.
Question: How difficult was it to complete 39 laps on a single set of tires?
Lando Norris: It was tough to maintain a consistently high pace for those laps. In the final stages, the tires lost their effectiveness; in such situations, it’s easy to make mistakes, to lock the tires. I knew I could preserve the tires until the end, but I had to overtake other drivers — I was aiming for George and Charles, hoping to fight Oscar at the finish. And that’s exactly what happened.
Question: What were you thinking at the end of the first lap when you were fifth?
Lando Norris: “Brilliant.” That’s exactly what I said after completing the first lap. Before the start, I watched quite a few recordings of the first lap. Clearly, that didn’t help.
Actually, I had a decent start. Charles did too. Then Oscar moved to the left, and I hoped they would both stay on the right. I tucked into the slipstream behind Oscar, but he was in the slipstream behind Charles, which gave him a bit more speed. I had some bad luck with how the circumstances unfolded. I think if we repeated the race, everything would have gone better than today. It was the worst-case scenario. But I started well, so I have nothing to complain about.
Question: The second half of the season will decide the championship. How challenging will this battle be, including psychologically?
Lando Norris: It’s already tough now, and it will continue to be. There’s very little difference between us. I’m confident I can improve in some areas. Oscar would probably say the same. We’re in for a tense fight until the end of the season, with full concentration on each race, each session.
Right now, I’m looking forward to the summer break; I want to rest a bit so I can come back in the best shape. There are areas I need to improve on. That’s what I’ll focus on.
