Liberty Media reported revenue growth.
Liberty Media reported Formula 1’s revenues for the second quarter of the year — they reached $1.341 billion, and this is the second-best quarterly result ever since the American corporation acquired the commercial rights to the World Championship.
It looks all the more impressive against the first quarter’s figures, which amounted to $403 million. Such a rapid increase in revenues is explained by a combination of factors: contracts with racing circuits, sponsorship income, and the undeniable commercial success of F1 The Movie also played a part.
The film starring Brad Pitt, which premiered at the end of June, has reportedly already grossed around $590 million at the worldwide box office, and that total will continue to grow because from August 22 it will be available on digital streaming platforms.
“This season features brilliant races, with several teams and drivers performing at a very high level,” commented Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1. “There was also the premiere of a film from Apple Studios, which has rightly received praise and become the highest-grossing project among all streaming services… Cultural events like this film, together with the thrilling battles on the racetracks, are creating a confident trend of audience growth, and the role of social networks and digital platforms is particularly positive in this, with official Formula 1 channels delivering record viewership. Thanks to the efforts of our teams, our partners and the entire racing community, Formula 1 is building fantastic momentum both on and off the track.”
Prize payments to teams are determined on the basis of the Concorde Agreement depending on the results achieved in the previous season. In total, over the first six months of the year, Formula 1 paid championship participants $627 million.
In particular, according to experts’ estimates, McLaren received about $88 million, while Sauber, which finished 10th in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, received just over $37 million.
Although the one-off effect of the film’s premiere contributed to the growth in second-quarter figures, Liberty Media indicated that revenues may decline somewhat in the third quarter due to the summer break, as usually happens each season.
