Twenty-two years ago Fernando Alonso achieved his first victory.
Today marks exactly 22 years since Fernando Alonso’s first victory in Formula 1 – the future two-time world champion won the Hungarian Grand Prix back then.
The Spanish driver was 22 years and 26 days old and at that time became the youngest winner in F1 history – until then that record belonged to Bruce McLaren.
A day earlier Alonso had also taken pole in the Renault R23B, which on the narrow, twisty Hungaroring is no less important than in Monaco. And on Sunday Fernando led from the start and gave up first place only briefly when he first came into the pits on lap 13.
By the way, Kimi Räikkönen, another young McLaren driver, led the race for just one lap, but Alonso returned to the track in second because by the time of the pit stop his advantage had already exceeded 20 seconds.
Kimi soon pitted as well, after which Fernando led to the chequered flag. Over the course of that Grand Prix he made three pit stops in total, completely controlling the race, and an episode near the finish made a particularly strong impression on everyone when Alonso lapped both Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari and the car of Jarno Trulli, his teammate at the factory Renault team.
“Too many impressions for one day!” the jubilant Alonso said after that race. “The weekend went perfectly, I took pole and now the race – my dream has come true. I’m 22 and I’ve already taken my first victory, so I hope my Formula 1 career will be long and there will be many more wins.”
Twenty-two years later Fernando Alonso still competes in Formula 1, and who knows, he may set more records, but he already has at least one impressive statistical achievement: the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix was his 415th World Championship race.
Perhaps even he himself doesn’t know how many more Grands Prix he is destined to contest, but one thing is certain: at 44 Alonso is still in great shape, consistently scoring points, and three weeks ago at the same Hungaroring he claimed a more than respectable fifth place — especially considering he is driving the Aston Martin AMR25, far from the fastest car on the grid.
