Charles Leclerc: Kimi underestimated the situation
The Dutch Grand Prix ended with Ferrari's first double retirement of the season. Lewis Hamilton crashed his car in turn three, and Kimi Antonelli sent Charles Leclerc into the wall exiting that same turn. The race was over for the Monegasque, while the Mercedes driver received a 10-second penalty.
Charles Leclerc (retired): "Everyone saw what happened during the incident with Kimi. On tracks like this mistakes happen because you have to be aggressive to make an overtake. That's exactly how I acted in the fight with George Russell, and Kimi was trying to act in exactly the same way in his fight with me. I think he misjudged the situation and ruined my race. It's a shame, but these things happen.
I don't know whether the incident could have been avoided if I hadn't gone for that pit stop. My tires were fine, but the engineers had a different opinion because they had access to all the data.
They considered it right to make the pit stop, which led to such a stressful situation. But otherwise I don't think the decision to pit was wrong."
Lewis Hamilton (retired): "At that point in the race I didn't really want to do the undercut. I was just telling the team that we should try to do the undercut at some point. At that moment I wanted to stay out because the tires were in good condition.
What happened came as a complete surprise to me — I lost control of the rear of the car on the banking, and that was it. I tried to steer out of it but couldn't.
I'm sorry for the team because today I wanted to score points for them. I felt I could run at the same pace as the cars ahead. I really hoped to make up positions in the race.
Aside from that, the weekend was not bad. I think we made progress, including in my approach to the work. It hurts to leave the track without any points.
Mentally I feel fine. There was a lot of positive, and I feel I made progress, catching up to the cars ahead. It's hard to accept such a result.
I've been racing for many years and have already done so many races. Incidents like this involving me can be counted on one hand."
