A former teammate of Fernando Alonso has been arrested in Brazil.
Tarso Marques, Fernando Alonso's first teammate in Formula 1, was arrested in Brazil for "illegal possession of a luxury vehicle."
The former driver was driving around São Paulo in a Lamborghini Gallardo without license plates. During a routine check, local police found that there was an unpaid debt on the car of 1.3 million Brazilian reais (approximately US$239,000) and arrested Marques.
Tarso Marques spent two seasons in Formula 1 — in 1997 and 2001 — serving as Alonso's teammate at Minardi. Neither Marques nor Alonso scored points that season, but the Brazilian finished higher in the standings thanks to two ninth-place finishes at the Brazilian and Canadian Grands Prix, compared with one tenth-place finish for Fernando in Germany.
After losing his race seat, Marques remained in Formula 1 for a while as a reserve and test driver, after which he competed in touring car racing in Brazil, where he ended his career in 2018.
