Domenicali indicates an increase in sprint races - as well as reverse grids.

"The drivers are convinced they need them"

Stefano Domenicali has provided the clearest indication yet that Formula 1 may broaden its sprint race format and even test reverse grids. In an interview with Italian media prior to this weekend’s Monza event, the F1 CEO noted that there is increasing demand from all quarters for shorter Saturday races and sprint qualifying to substitute traditional practice sessions.

"We need to discuss the formats for the upcoming years," he stated. "Everyone desires more sprint races instead of the free practice on Fridays, including promoters and fans. The drivers are convinced they need them—18 are in favor, and perhaps two are opposed. Even Max (Verstappen) is starting to come around, and things are shifting in that direction."

For the time being, Domenicali assured that not every weekend of the 24-race calendar would implement this format. "Having them every weekend, like MotoGP, is too significant a shift, but that doesn’t mean we can’t reach that point or at least approach weekends differently. It’s a maturation process that must be handled with care. It’s an approach that enhances the sport’s content.

"Fans are weary of free practice, as our polls indicate, and they want to see action. The proposal of a reversed grid is also under consideration."

Just days ago, in De Telegraaf, Domenicali acknowledged that there was once strong opposition to the sprint concept. "How could we dare to alter the very essence of F1?" he reflects on the criticism. "However, if Formula 1, or any other sport, does not adapt its philosophy, it risks losing the interest of the general public.

"We must continue to evolve as a sport, while of course not alienating the fans. But ignoring the new generation is not wise either."

Skeptics might doubt that Verstappen is softening his position, given his well-documented resistance to the format. However, Domenicali asserts: "Max? If you speak to him privately, he’ll begin to see that the format is reasonable. After all, drivers are meant to race. In a few years, all the GPs will likely request a weekend that includes the sprint race on Saturday."
