McLaren's value has increased sixfold over five years.
The company that owns the McLaren team is valued at around £3.5 billion — its market value has increased more than sixfold over the past five years.
Such an impressive rise was made possible by changes in the ownership structure of McLaren Group. In 2020, American MSP Capital acquired 33% of its shares, paying £185 million for them, but that investment group has now been bought out by Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, and CYVN Holdings of Abu Dhabi. And whereas five years ago McLaren Racing was valued at £560 million, it is now worth the aforementioned £3.5 billion.
Mumtalakat held the controlling stake in McLaren until last year, but in December 2024 the fund sold all 100% of those shares to the CYVN holding.
“This is a wonderful day for McLaren Racing,” BBC Sport quotes Zak Brown as saying. “Until recently our business was very risky, and we were not competitive. But what has happened now, five years on, highlights the success of Formula 1 as a whole in the era of budget caps, which has once again allowed us to return to our previous level of competitiveness.
“It’s great that McLaren is once again fighting for victories, and it’s fantastic that our ownership structure has become more straightforward.”
Last year McLaren won the constructors’ championship for the first time since 1998, and is now steadily closing in on victory in both classifications of the world championship. Its drivers, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, occupy the top two places in the championship standings, having won 12 of this year’s 15 races between them.
“A simpler shareholding structure and an increase in the amount of shareholder funds are the result of the recent transaction, leaving McLaren Racing in a stronger position, and the team will continue to achieve success both on and off the track,” the Woking-based company said.
McLaren Racing is part of McLaren Group, and it was announced on Tuesday that Mumtalakat and CYVN had bought all the shares of the company led by Zak Brown.
