Sainz and Williams urge the FIA for consistency in stewarding decisions.
Carlos Sainz mentioned that even the FIA has privately recognized that their stewards may have made a mistake in penalizing him at Zandvoort. The Williams driver was involved in a collision with Liam Lawson at Zandvoort and expressed his anger not only towards his rival from Racing Bulls but also directed his frustrations at the stewards. Williams has officially filed for a 'right of review' concerning the decision to penalize the 31-year-old.
Sainz disclosed to Spanish media that he met with FIA officials after the Dutch GP, stating, "When they reviewed the evidence—something I believe they hadn’t seen—which demonstrated that I wasn’t responsible for the accident and that it was merely a racing incident, they began to understand." As a GPDA director, Sainz pointed out that this situation underscores broader concerns regarding inconsistent stewarding. "As a category, this is something we need to enhance," he noted.
"That's the only thing I can say when I’m calm. When I’m upset, it would be a lot more difficult. But it’s evident that what transpired should not occur. It can't be that some instances result in penalties while others do not."
His teammate, Alex Albon, acknowledged at Monza that many drivers feel puzzled while racing. "When I’m battling wheel to wheel, I don’t fully grasp what is permissible and what isn’t," he explained. "So, I tend to follow my own guidelines to determine what constitutes a fair overtake and what is a valid defense. It works for me."
In contrast, Lawson stated at Monza that Sainz had not reached out to discuss the incident. "I didn’t hear from him," said the New Zealander. "I assumed that if he was that upset, he would want to have a conversation about it, but he didn’t approach me."
